Dog dies after being left in car with windows mostly rolled up

BOSTON — A pit bull has died after being left in a car with windows mostly rolled up Tuesday afternoon.

A passerby noticed the dog in Jamaica Plain and made a frantic call for help.

“The dog might have been in there as early as 1:30 p.m. and the call came in a little after 4 p.m. to Boston police,” Amanda Kennedy from Boston Inspectional Services Department said.

Emergency responders were on the scene within minutes. They took the dog to MSPCA Angell Medical Center but it was too late.

“Unfortunately, within a minute of the dog arriving his heart stopped beating,” Kennedy said. “His temperature on arrival was 109.7, which is as high as the thermometer will go.”

The dog's core temperature was indicative of the suffering it endured in what was essentially a locked greenhouse.

“Once the temperatures reach about 65 degrees, if you leave your dog in the car within 20 minutes it can become quite hot - up to 85 degrees,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy said there was every indication the dog was well taken care of by its owner, but not today.
