Court docs: Man injured in explosion first told police his computer blew up

BOSTON — A man accused of causing an explosion in East Boston has been held on $200,000 cash bail and would have to have a GPS monitor.

Thomas Mikula, 28, had severe burns on his face and arms when he was arraigned in his hospital bed Monday afternoon.

Mikula was accused of setting off a chemical explosion in his second-floor apartment in East Boston early Sunday morning.

Police Commissioner William Evans says Mikula was tinkering with the chemicals in his East Boston apartment early Sunday when they "blew up in his face."

Police investigators were still working to get a better handle on Mikula’s mindset Monday and Mayor Marty Walsh told Boston 25 News investigators were going through the man’s personal items to get a sense of what he was up to.

"I know they'll investigate everything about the person and probably look at emails and things like that to see if there is anything that says anything," Walsh said.

According to court proceedings, Mikula told the first emergency officials on scene that he been outside walking his dog and when he came back in to turn on his computer, it exploded.

Mikula was the only person hurt in the explosion. After searching his apartment, police say they found multiple handguns, a rifle and air rifles. Members of the BPD Bomb Squad went in and said they saw evidence of materials commonly associated with making an explosive device.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said Sunday investigators do not believe Mikula was involved in any sort of terrorism attack.
