Could certified gas workers prevent future Merrimack Valley-type disasters?

BOSTON — Governor Charlie Baker has filed new legislation in response to the National Transportation Safety Board recommendations following the Merrimack Valley Gas Explosions.

The governor wants state lawmakers to require certified professional engineers to review natural gas work that could pose a danger to the public.

Last week, the NTSB said a licensed engineer could have potentially spotted critical oversights by Columbia Gas and prevented the September disaster.

The explosions killed one person, injured more than two dozen others and damaged or destroyed more than 100 buildings.

The governor also announced $10 million in additional funding to support business recovery efforts.
