Charges pending for driver who allegedly smashed into multiple cars on I-93 south in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Mass. — A terrifying scene unfolded on I-93 south in Wilmington on Saturday. Drivers on the highway say a man was ramming his truck into other people’s cars for several miles before slamming into a guard rail.

State police say that driver is being treated at Lahey Hospital in Burlington and was allegedly high on drugs when he smashed into at least four vehicles. A child, who was uninjured, was found in the car with him as well, police said.

“My mother called me this morning crying, praying,” said Michelle DiGregorio, a witness. “She’s like, ‘I cannot believe we did not get killed yesterday on the highway.’”

DiGregorio called the incident a rampage. “We thought we were going to die,” she said.

DiGregorio, from Malden, says she was driving with her mom on I-93 south in Wilmington when she saw a driver crash into other cars in the high-speed lane.

“This white Ford F-150 just literally flew up beside me and started ramming into people in front of him, which had them skate across, causing other people to hit each other,” she said. “And he did that for at least two exits.”

Running over bumpers and dodging debris, DiGregorio said she managed to call 911 and watched as the truck continued to strike all vehicles in its path.

“I slowed down because he hit another car, he hit another SUV,” she said. “She ended up going sideways, somebody smashed into her sideways. Her car actually tipped over, and I was driving into her undercarriage and if I didn’t swerve.”

DiGregorio says the truck ultimately swerved across all lanes of traffic and struck a guard rail. State Police confirmed to Boston 25 News that the driver was found unresponsive and under the influence of drugs. Narcan was administered to the driver four times by Wilmington Police.

State Police say the driver was a 33-year-old man from Pelham, New Hampshire. Police said he will receive a summons for several charges and more information is expected to be released Monday. The man is still hospitalized with injuries.

“I don’t know how I’m standing here today,” DiGregorio said. “I’m telling you.”

None of the other drivers were injured during the alleged incident, according to police.
