Cat and dog die in Somerville fire that displaces six residents

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — A cat and dog died and six people were displaced after a house fire in Somerville.

The fire, which broke out at a house on Broadway around 4 p.m. Friday, caused extensive damage.

Crews struggled early to attack the fire, which started in the basement, the fire chief said.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke when they arrived. It took crews about an hour to knock the fire down.

One resident told Boston 25 News that she is very upset after losing her cat and all of her possessions.

"The fire burnt up the center floor of the house and we had a lot of work to do to open up walls and ceilings to get ahead of the fire,"
