BROCKTON, Mass. — Obinna Igbokwe Is Brockton High School’s newest and most reluctant celebrity.
The 17-year-old is on his way to the Ivy League for college after getting into seven of the eight member schools.
“I feel as if it's a little embarrassing,” he said.
FOX25 surprised Obinna by showing up at his school Wednesday to talk to him, much like his list of acceptance letters surprised him.
"I expected that I would get into some,” he said.
In addition to an SAT score of 2100 and a weighted GPA of 4.6, the senior plays bass guitar, volunteers, and works at the Mass. Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health in Boston.
“I just like doing what I do,” he said.
Obinna is the youngest of four children and the son of Nigerian immigrants. He said his secret to success is simple.
"My work ethic came from the fact that I have been able to have a clear vision of what I want,” he said.
Brockton High School Principal Sharon Wolder echoed those sentiments.
"He didn't care about the odds. He cared about who he was; the opportunities he had, and he gave as much as he took,” he said.
Now Obinna’s toughest decision will be where to go and what to major in.
"Environmental science, biomedical engineering kind of track with aspirations maybe of becoming a doctor. Something similar to that,” he said.
There’s still time before he needs to make his decision. Obinna tells FOX25 he’s narrowed it down to three schools; Harvard, Princeton or Columbia.
For those wondering, the one Ivy League school he didn’t get into was Yale.
