Brighton double shooting: Victim's mother mourns as suspect remains on loose

While Boston Police detectives continue to search for the suspect in a fatal double shooting in Brighton, one victim's mother is dealing with the pain of losing her son.

Over the weekend, Sheila Simmons-Montaque got a knock on the door from Boston Police with bad news.

"'I'm sorry to tell you.' When he said that, my heart just stopped," Simmons-Montaque said. "'I’m sorry to tell, you, my condolences, Jeffrey was shot and killed.'"

Simmons-Montaque's son, 27-year-old Jeffrey Montaque, was shot and killed next to 26-year-old Wilfred Peters in the incident early Saturday morning on Faneuil and Brackett Streets.

"I just froze," Simmons-Montaque said. "It was like a nightmare, I was trying to wake up from it."

Witnesses say they heard arguing moments before the shooting, but Montaque's mother said he was never a confrontational person.

"Jeffrey won't step on a fly, he will let the fly live," Simmons-Montaque said. "He wouldn't hurt anybody."

Simmons-Montaque said she is left puzzled as to why someone would do that to her son.

"I haven't been able to sleep since he was gone," Simmons-Montaque said. "It will be a shock forever. I told the detective, 'You have to find out who did this to my son.'"
