Braintree officers honored for helping save life of brother in blue

BRAINTREE, Mass. — Three Braintree police officers were recognized Thursday for helping save the life of a brother in blue.

Officers John Hurley, Rich Hale and Steve Wallace were honored at the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee First Responder Award Ceremony, which was held at Bentley University.

In August of last year, the officers responded to a report of an unresponsive person in a car on Granite Street. The unresponsive person turned out to be Weymouth Police K9 Officer Edward Hancock, who had suffered a massive heart attack in the passenger seat of his car. Hancock was off-duty at the time.

The Braintree officers initiated CPR and used Wallace’s defibrillator.

“Rapid response and high quality CPR can be credited towards this positive outcome,” Braintree Police wrote.

Hancock attended the award ceremony.
