Boston Public Schools investigating after student left on school bus

BOSTON — Boston Public Schools officials say they're investigating after a student was left on a school bus.

The little boy's parents say they're grateful he wasn't hurt but things could have been worse.

The boy told Boston 25 News that he fell asleep while on the bus.

"I went on the bus and started getting tired," said 7-year-old Xavier Toledo, adding that he doesn't remember most of his bus ride to school Monday morning.

"I started deep sleeping," the boy said.

But when he woke up, he was the only student on the bus.

"I was scared at first because I always thought it wouldn’t happen to me. I always say, 'God forbid it would happen' but then it happened," Xavier said.

Boston Public Schools confirmed that both the bus driver and the bus monitor did not notice Xavier asleep on the bus when they arrived at his school, the Up Academy in Dorchester.

Xavier and his brother Isaiah ride the bus together every day. When Isaiah didn't see Xavier at school, he told the principal, who called their parents.

" I started to get worried that he went to the wrong bus stop or he was left with no one was there.," said the boy's brother, Isaiah Toledo.

Their mother, Wanda Toledo, said she panicked when she got the news.

"I got a phone call from my husband saying they can’t find my son so here I am with a 2-year-old ready to go find him," she said.

Meanwhile, Xavier said he was panicking. He has asthma and was worried he would have an attack.

"He was about to panic, about to get asthma, waking up not seeing students or his brother, no one around but himself there," his mother said.

Boston Public Schools said in a statement: "The driver discovered the presence of the child a short time later while en route to another location."

"The bus driver started getting so mad and started getting a tone," said Xavier Toledo.

Boston Public Schools placed both the bus driver and bus monitor on leave as the district investigates.

Bus monitors are expected to check the bus at each stop to make sure everyone gets off where they're supposed to.

Part of the school investigation is to determine if protocol was followed.
