Preps underway for Boston Fourth of July celebration

BOSTON — People will flood the Esplanade Tuesday night for a preview of the Boston Pops 4th of July concert.

Aside from security, organizers want to make sure people stay safe with the excessive heat we’ve been having. The past two years, temperatures were in the 80s, but this year the heat will stick around - and add to it the humidity.

After all, it is July.

"It's just a great time, and celebrating the 4th of July in Boston, there's nothing like it!" Christy Scott said.

Despite the heat, dozens lined up by noon, seeking shelter from the shade.

"I've never done this before," Sara Pena said while she waited in line. "I think it's something worth lining up for. Great line up of artists, fantastic cup of iced coffee to accompany me."

Organizers are asking people who come to the Esplanade to stay hydrated.

Remember, backpacks and coolers on wheels are not allowed.

"It's going to be a very hot night and I hope everyone comes prepared to recognize and understand that," said Governor Charlie Baker.

"It's going to be very hot Wednesday. It's going to be very hot all week," said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. "We're asking people to stay hydrated. Keep an eye on any elderly neighbors that you might have. If you see any homeless individuals in need of help, we're asking you to call 911 so we can address that situation."

Army Sergeant Mark Meagher says he's endured much hotter conditions, but what makes him sweat the most is performing at the Hatch Shell.

Meagher was invited to play with his high school jazz ensemble band, and called it a "surreal moment."

"I don't know what came out of my mouth for the first 30 seconds because there were 3,000 people staring at me," Meagher said. "After that, it was quite a bit of fun."
