BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) â Sunday afternoon police in South Boston arrested a man in the 700 block of East Broadway after an alleged hammer attack.
Officers said they were called at 4:30 p.m. for a man bleeding from the head and swinging a hammer in the area. A large crowd had gathered in the area of the suspect, 52-year-old John Connolly.
As police were clearing on-lookers from the area, Connolly allegedly went after several officers with the hammer, forcing them to retreat to their cruisers.
According to police Connolly refused to put the hammer down when ordered and even smashed the window of a business.
At that point an officer aimed a bean bag gun at the suspect, at which point he put the hammer down and after a struggle was taken in to custody.
An ambulance took the suspect to a hospital while officers investigated the scene and found damage to several other buildings and vehicles in the area.
Connolly will be charged with five counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and four counts of willful malicious destruction of property.
