PLYMOUTH, Mass. — It was a muddy morning for two women who sank into the mudflats in Plymouth.
Plymouth Fire Department said during low tide Thursday, two woman were walking in the reeds off the roadway and wandered a little too far.
The first woman sank almost to her knees in the mud. That's when Joanne Corrigan tried to help, but got even more stuck.
“The more I struggled the more it sucked me down into it,” Corrigan said. “It’s just paralyzing that stuff, it’s like quick sand.”
The women were able to wiggle free for a short time, but then they got stuck again and needed help.
Plymouth Fire crews made a path to access them, using ground ladders and hovercraft. Some parts of the mudflats are stable enough so they were able to use the ladders and pull the two women out.
Corrigan said the two women were part of a group out for a weekly hike when they split off then decided to cross the marsh to meet back up with the rest of the group.
