FALL RIVER, Mass. — An investigation is underway in Fall River after a 19-year-old man was shot and killed by police officers.
Just after 11:30 pm. Sunday, Fall River police say they received a 911 call of gun shots near Airport Road and Riggenbach Road.
When police got there, they saw a number of cars leaving the area. An officer tried to stop one of the cars from leaving the scene. During that encounter, the officer fired shots into the car, striking the driver.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Larry Ruiz-Barreto of New Bedford, was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Family members accused of getting into a fight with officers at the hospital appeared in court Monday. Police used a stun gun on one of the victims, who police say punched an officer in the head. All of the family members are now out on bail.
Police and the DA aren't saying much about that incident.
