Truck crash causes bridge to shift 6 feet in Georgia

TREUTLEN COUNTY, Ga. — Officials shut down part of Interstate 16 in Georgia on Thursday morning after a truck crashed into a bridge and caused it to shift six feet, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation and WSB-TV.

Officials said a “large dump trailer” struck the State Route 86 bridge on Thursday morning, prompting authorities to close the interstate from Exit 71 to Exit 78 in Treutlen County. Engineers were on site Thursday morning evaluating the situation, WSB reported.

It was not immediately clear when lanes would reopen.

“Motorists are urged to remain patient during this closure,” GDOT officials said in a statement. “Crews are working to repair and reopen the roadway as soon as possible to minimize impact to the traveling public.”
