New Hampshire Fish and Game said that a hiker and his wife were taking photos Saturday morning, according to The Associated Press. The hiker fell about 300 feet.

The woman reportedly heard her husband calling for help. She turned around and saw him falling over the edge of a cliff, NHFG said, according to the AP.

NFHG later identified the hiker as Joseph V. Eggleston, 53.

“Joseph and his wife are longtime residents of New Hampshire and frequent hikers. They were well prepared for the trail and weather conditions on Saturday, December 10th. They were equipped with the essential equipment to include traction devices on their boots for the frozen and icy trail,” said NFHG in a Facebook post.

Mountain Rescue Service technicians worked to retrieve Eggleston’s body from the cliff, which officials said took hours due to the icy conditions, according to the AP.

Mount Willard is located in the center of Crawford Notch and has an elevation of 2,865 feet, according to the AP.

No further information has been released.
