Toyota recalling about 192,000 Prius models in U.S. due to wiring issue

Toyota is recalling about 192,000 Prius models in the U.S. due to a wiring issue that increases the risk of fire.

The company announced it was recalling certain 2016-2018 Prius models on Sept. 5. The recall is expected to affect about 1 million vehicles worldwide and just under 200,000 in the US.

Toyota said in a statement that the vehicles under recall have an issue with an engine wire harness that could short circuit due to rubbing over time:

"The subject vehicles have an engine wire harness which is connected to the hybrid vehicle Power Control Unit.  A portion of the wire harness could contact the cover at this connection and wear over time, causing an electrical short circuit, which can generate heat. If sufficient heat is generated, there is an increased risk of a vehicle fire," the statement said.

Toyota dealers will check the harness and replace it if necessary, or add protective tape. There is no cost to customers for the repair and all known owners will be notified starting in late September by mail, the statement said.
