Technical issues force hours-long halt in trading at New York Stock Exchange

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

NEW YORK (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Trading resumed Wednesday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange after a technology issue caused trading to halt Wednesday morning.

The stock exchange said the temporary halt came at around 11:30 a.m., lasting for close to four hours, reopening at 3:10 p.m., enough time for trades to be made for just under an hour, when the market closes at 4 p.m.

All open orders at the time of the halt were canceled, the NYSE announced on its website. The Department of Homeland Security said there was "no sign of malicious activity" regarding the technical issues.

Business was completely stopped as stock brokers waited for the problem to be resolved, but trading in other exchanges, including the Nasdaq, continued.

"We're working to resolve this as quickly as possible," the NYSE said in a statement Wednesday morning. The exact nature of the problem was not publicly released.

At the time of the halt, the Dow was down 175 points for the day.

The market was already lower as traders worried about China's failure to halt a plunge in its shares and talks remained stuck between Greece and its lenders.
