Police: State trooper shoots man armed with knife in Malden

MALDEN, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police is investigating a shooting involving an officer in Malden.

Around noon Thursday, Revere Police received a 911 call reporting a man inside the Stop & Shop in Revere acting erratically. The man was asked to leave the store and was seen walking toward Malden.

An on-duty trooper in Malden saw the suspect, who witnesses say was armed with a knife, and began telling him to drop the knife. The subject did not.

A Malden Police officer arrived and both officers told the subject to drop the weapon.

After unsuccessfully attempting hand control techniques to get him to drop the knife, the trooper discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect, who police say remained combative.

The man was arrested by Malden Police for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was taken to Mass. General Hospital where he is in stable condition. His identity has not been released.

The two officers were transported for stress evaluations. Both are said to be OK.

No further information is available at this time.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation.
