Ruby Tuesday to close 95 restaurants

Ruby Tuesday has announced plans to shut down 95 underperforming restaurants — more than 13 percent of its total — by September.

The restaurant chain did not identify which restaurants were targeted for closure. Ruby Tuesday operates 724 restaurants nationwide, 646 company-owned, according to Nation's Restaurant News.

“The decision to close restaurants is a difficult but necessary step as we take aggressive actions to strengthen our organization,” J.J. Buettgen, Ruby Tuesday’s CEO, said in a statement. “Performance at each of these locations, despite the loyalty of valued guests and the efforts of our dedicated employees, was not meeting expectations. Full-time and part-time employees impacted by closures will be offered positions in nearby restaurants where possible.”

In Thursday’s financial results, the company reported that same-restaurant sales had declined 3.7 percent following a 1.7 percent decline in the fourth quarter of the prior fiscal year, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.
