Police search for man who smashed windshield, entered church with bat

WHITMAN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A man with a bat smashed the windshield of a car at the Whitman Church Center and then went inside with the weapon.

The church center is used for activities almost everyday of the week; Boy Scouts meet there and Confirmation classes are taught there, which is why police say this incident is concerning. The man not only damaged the car, but also walked into the building with the bat in hand.

Det. Mark Poirier said, "He drove around to the rear of the Cardinal Spellman Park next to the victim's car, got out with a bat and smashed the windshield."

And it's all caught on surveillance video.

Police say after the man damaged what they believe was a car chosen at random outside the center, he went inside, with the bat. He stormed into the center's gym while children watched a movie Tuesday evening.

"As soon as he was confronted, he swore, said a few things, turned around, went back, got into car and left the area," Poirier said.

Police are now searching for the man, his identity and his motive.

"Definitely confusing as to what his intentions were," Poirier said. "We know his intention was obviously to damage the vehicle at some point but we're curious why he was in the Cardinal Spellman Center."

He was seen at the affiliated Holy Ghost Parish church next door last week and police posted photos on their Facebook page.

Paul Stokinger has been a parishioner and volunteer for decades and says he's never heard of anything like this before. He hopes the police catch this man so everyone can get some answers.

Anyone with information is asked to call Whitman police.
