Plymouth man police say fired shots at them held without bail

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — The man who police say fired at them faced a judge in his Boston hospital room.

Michael Walsh, 36, is charged with multiple counts of assault to murder after police say he opened fire on more than a half dozen police officers.

As the first officers pulled up to the home, they say the suspect stepped out the front door and started firing his handgun right at them.

Neighbors say it turned into a full on shoot-out.

"Probably a dozen, I mean there were a lot," said Pam Bock of Plymouth.

The bullet holes were everywhere along the front of the Federal Furnace Road home in Plymouth and a truck outside had damage.

"I never heard so many shots all at once," said David Salgado of Plymouth.

Police say Walsh is the man with the gun who they say opened fire on them. The 36-year-old was arraigned on multiple assault to murder charges at Mass. General on Friday.

Walsh, who police say is a retired disabled police officer from South Carolina, first fired shots at his wife's car as she tried to drive off. Police say a minor family member was in the car at the time.

The police report says he was upset on Thursday after a meeting with DCF where he learned the biological mother of two of his children was trying to gain custody. His current wife told police he has had brain damage and suicidal issues ever since a bad crash he was involved in when he was in law enforcement.

Plymouth Police say they had been to that home before. Some neighbors say four or five times.

None of the police officers were physically hurt during the incident.

Walsh pleaded not guilty on Friday and is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.
