FRYEBURG, Maine. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Rescuers helped save a local man after his canoe flipped over in Maine.

A 55-year-old man from Rockland, Mass. had been using a canoe in the Saco River around 1 p.m. on Sunday when officials say he flipped his canoe over in an area known as "Walker's Rips".

Witnesses say the man went under the water and struck his head and knee on the rocks before fellow canoeists pulled him to a nearby beach.

Fryeburg police and rescue teams carried the injured man for about 150 yards before transporting him to the hospital for head and knee injuries.
