Orphaned raccoon rescued by family thinks it's a dog, too

NASSAU, Bahamas - A month-old raccoon fell from a tree in Rosie Kemp’s backyard about a year ago.

The frail animal had a broken leg. Kemp waited and watched for the animal's mother, which did not return, according to the Dodo.

So Kemp, who lives in Nassau, Bahamas, took in the raccoon. There are no raccoon rescues and it is legal to own them there. Kemp raised the raccoon, Pumpkin, with her two dogs, also rescues.

She now thinks she is a dog," Young said to the Dodo. "She is able to play and be rough with them and she respects them when they have had enough."

The raccoon recovered in time. Young has shared Pumpkin's adventures on social media including Instagram and Twitter.

"They are so unbelievably intelligent, very aware, and I would say they are even able to express emotions," Young said to the Dodo.
