ATTLEBORO, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 17-year-old drowned at an apartment complex in Attleboro Wednesday.
The teen, Ibrahim Iqbal, of Brooklyn, drowned in the Crystal Village Apartment's indoor swimming pool located on Commonwealth Avenue just after 3 p.m. He was swimming laps in the Olympic-sized pool before he was found unresponsive at the bottom of the deep end. He made several attempts to touch the bottom of the pool, but didn't come back up the last time.
Residents who live there say the pool is open year-round and people are asked to swim at their own risk, as there is no lifeguard on duty. A good Samaritan heard the screams while waiting at a bus stop and tried to resuscitate the teen. Daniel Beshers dove into the pool, pulled Iqbal out and began performing CPR.
"There was no time to really think about it, like I said, someone had to get him," Beshers explained.
When first responders arrived, they rushed Iqbal to a local hospital but were unable to save him.
Sgt. Ron Goyette said, "Any time you have any sort of injury at all especially when it's your family member it's always tragic and you never want to see that happen to anyone, to anybody's family members, not yours, not somebody else's and it weighs on the family."
Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's office, said the drowning was an accident, but they are unsure if Iqbal has any medical conditions. The investigation remains ongoing.
Iqbal was staying with relatives who lived at the apartment complex.
