No students hurt in West Bridgewater school bus crash

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — No students were hurt when a school bus and pick-up truck collided in West Bridgewater Friday afternoon, according to a statement from West Bridgewater Public Schools.

West Bridgewater Fire Department told Boston 25 News the crash happened around 12:20 p.m. on Route 28 in the area of Bedford Street.

Police said a pick-up truck traveling northbound on Route 28 crossed into the southbound lane, forcing the school bus driver to veer off the road to avoid a collision. However, the bus driver wasn't able to completely pull out of the way, causing the truck to collide with the rear of the school bus.

"The accident appears to be the fault of a white pick-up moving into the lane of the oncoming bus," the school district's statement added. "The bus driver swerved to get out of the way of the truck so that there was less of an impact when the truck hit the bus."

The district said all students evacuated the bus after the crash and were kept safe until emergency crews arrived.

First responders evaluated the students at the scene and determined they weren't hurt.

The bus was taking a small group of Rose L. MacDonald School students home at the time of the crash.

A new bus arrived at the scene and brought the student to the Spring Street School, where they were reevaluated by a nurse before being released to family members.

Police said the bus driver was taken to a hospital as a precaution and is expected to be fine. The district thanked him for "his quick thinking and putting the safety of our students first at all times."

The driver of the pick-up truck was also checked out at the scene and refused medical treatment, according to police.

Police processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The bus is operated by Lucini Bus Lines. Boston 25 News called the company for comment, but the person who answered the phone declined our request.
