Kenmore Station, downtown roads closed during Super Bowl

BOSTON — MBTA’s Kenmore Square stop will be closed Sunday night starting in the second half of the Super Bowl, the transit agency announced Saturday morning.

The closure is part of police’s wider plans to secure the area, should the New England Patriots win the game.

In the past fans have poured onto the streets to celebrate Super Bowl wins and police want to ensure that everyone stays safe during any possible celebrations.

The MBTA said Boston police requested the temporary closure Sunday evening, meaning the Green Line will bypass Kenmore and buses normally stopping the square will stop at nearby stops instead.

MBTA officials say customers should take the Green Line to Hynes Station, Blandford Street, St. Mary’s Street or Fenway if they are looking to get to Kenmore.

Commissioner William Evans said the department has also requested certain temporary parking and access restrictions in areas of the city, including the Brighton area, Kenmore Square, Northeastern, Faneuil Hall and North Station areas.
