Mars wants people to eat less chocolate

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- We've heard from dieticians and doctors that we need to cut back how much sugar we eat. Now, the maker of the world's best-selling chocolate candy agrees.

Mars Inc. says they're all for new guidelines from U.S. regulators who say added sugar should be limited 10-percent of your daily calorie intake. They're also supporting a proposal to include measurements of added sugar on the nutrition labels.

Sugar is currently one of the few nutrients that doesn't have a recommended consumption level on labels, because the food and drug administration hasn't proposed a specific limit. Experts saying people would be more shocked by how much sugar is added to non-dessert products like pasta sauce, bread and yogurt. People expect it in chocolate, so the company isn't concerned with the transparency

The most sugar comes from 3 Musketeers bars at 40 grams, followed by Mars' Milky Way bars at 35 grams.

Mars makes more than $33 billion in annual sales in 73 countries. Its major candy competitors aren't commenting yet on whether or not they support the sugar measures.
