March 17 is also Evacuation Day in Boston

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- With St. Patrick's Day and Evacuation Day both falling on March 17, the day is doubly celebrated in Massachusetts.

Evacuation Day commemorates the 1776 evacuation of British forces from Boston after Dorchester Heights was fortified during the Revolutionary War. The fortification that included 800 soldiers and 1,200 workers was the result of direct orders from General George Washington, according to History.com.

Evacuation Day is observed in Suffolk County, but state and municipal offices remain open. Schools in Boston are closed in observance of the holiday.
