Man arrested at BU graduation with guns arraigned on $100k bail

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A man accused of trying to bring two loaded handguns into the commencement ceremony at Boston University was arraigned Monday.

Andrea Massa, 28, of Marshfield, was arrested at a security checkpoint outside of Sunday's even at Nickerson Field. Prosecutors say when a Boston University police officer stopped him to screen him through a metal detector, he objected loudly and abruptly, turning to walk away. Officers stopped him on Commonwealth Avenue, where they noticed bulges in the waistband of his pants, which turned out to be guns.

He was arraigned in Brighton District Court on charges of unlawfully carrying a firearm onto school grounds, violation of a firearm license restriction, disturbing a school and disturbing a public assembly.

Assistant Suffolk County District Attorney Michael Glennon said Massa was carrying two 9mm handguns. Both were loaded, and he was allegedly carrying additional magazines, The guns and two additional magazines contained a total of 28 rounds of hollow-point ammunition, Glennon said.

Massa is not a student and was reportedly at the ceremony for his sister-in-law's graduation. His wife told FOX 25 it was all just a misunderstanding. She said her husband has a license to carry, but only for hunting and target practice.

In court, Glennon also brought up a 2003 incident in Scituate in which Massa allegedly stated he wanted to "shoot all of my teachers."

He was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail. If he posts bail, Massa must submit to numerous conditions, including wearing a GPS monitor, surrendering his firearms, and staying away from all academic institutions.
