Longtime Winthrop police officer dies of sudden 'cardiac incident'

WINTHROP, Mass. — A 25-year veteran of the Winthrop Police Department passed away suddenly on Thursday, according to an official release from the department. Detective Michael Delehanty, 58, passed away after an apparent cardiac incident.

Delehanty had served as a police officer for 25 years and as a union electrician for more than 36. In recent years, Detective Delehanty worked at East Boston District Court as Winthrop’s Police Prosecutor.

He had also served as the president of the town’s Police Association and was a member of multiple organizations within the town of Winthrop, including the Patrolmen’s Union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #103 and the town’s yacht club.

Delehanty was described as a ‘dedicated volunteer’ by the release from Winthrop Police. He had been awarded a community service award for his over 20 years of service to Winthrop Advocacy, Resources, Community.

Michael Delehanty was the brother of three other police officers, including two who serve in Winthrop: Officer Sean Delehanty and Police Chief Terence M. Delehanty. Natick Police Detective Kevin Delehanty is also one five siblings to Michael.
