Police: Drunk driver almost hit Charlton officer conducting traffic stop

CHARLTON, Mass. — A suspected drunk driver is accused of almost hitting a police officer while he was conducting a traffic stop in Charlton on Tuesday.

R.J. St. John is charged with operating under the influence of liquor, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, having an open container of alcohol, a marked lanes violation and speeding.

Police said St. John almost struck Officer Daniel Hanks and his cruiser while Hanks was conducting a traffic stop on Route 20.

Hanks left the initial stop and was able to catch up with St. John.

Hanks said St. John showed signs of intoxication.
