WRENTHAM, Mass — Two 12-year-old boys from Wrentham are being called ‘Wicked Smaht’ after they found a grenade while out in the woods.
According to Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath, Kevin Castaneda and Jackson Allen were out in the woods hiking on Wednesday, when they spotted a pile of trash.
The two boys were curious, so they started sorting through the pile of trash and found a hand grenade.
Instead of picking the grenade up, the young boys took a a picture of it with their phones, made a mental note of their location, and ran home to tell their parents.
911 was called and Wrentham Police and Fire responded to the location, along with the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.
‘Had that grenade been live, had Kevin and Jackson caved to curiosity, this story would be tragic. But thankfully, two wicked smaht kids did the right thing and we all benefit from the lesson, for ourselves to share with and educate our own kids, Chief McGrath said.
The Bomb Squad determined the grenade had been hollowed out and was harmless when the boys found it.
It’s not clear how the grenade ended up in the woods.
