WALTHAM, Mass. — A water main break in Waltham has forced officials close down Totten Pond Road and exit 27a on 128 northbound.
Waltham police tweeted about the break Friday afternoon telling people to avoid Totten Pond Road and the area of 3rd Ave. Exit 27A on Route 128 northbound is currently closed as crews continue to repair the water main.
Police say the break is a result of a construction crew hitting a main. Crews had been working in the area on an ongoing construction project.
After the main was hit, a geyser of water shot up onto the road, undermining it and causing it to collapse. Rushing water flooded local roads and filled what became a massive hole on Third Avenue.
There is no word when the roads will reopen. Crews were working at the scene late into the night on Friday, and the roads will remain shut until they’re able to fix the break.
Some businesses in the area were impacted with the loss of water, among them the Westin Hotel and some office buildings nearby.
Traffic Advisory!! Avoid Totten Pond Rd, 3rd Ave area due to water main break. Rt. 95 N. exit 27a closed .
