‘Very difficult to see’: Whiteout conditions lead to crashes on New Hampshire highways

STRATHAM, N.H. — Authorities in New Hampshire are urging motorists to stay off highways and roads due to whiteout conditions that have led to more than 100 crashes on Tuesday.

In a tweet shortly after 2:30 p.m., New Hampshire State Police shared a photo of a jackknifed tractor-trailer on Route 101 in Stratham as heavy snow piled up on the highway.

“Snow continues to fall, causing whiteout conditions and making it very difficult to see while driving,” state police said. “Please stay off the roads if possible.”

Between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m., state police said troopers responded to more than 120 crashes and vehicles off the road across the Granite State.

The treacherous driving conditions and downed power lines brought traffic to a standstill on Interstate 93 in Londonderry.

By the time the winter storm wraps up Wednesday, snow totals in New England are expected to reach a couple of feet of snow in higher elevations to several inches along the coast.
