Two men rescued from water off Marshfield after boat goes into ‘Circle of Death’ spin

MARSHFIELD, Mass. — Two boaters were rescued after being thrown from a boat off the coast of Marshfield.

Police say the men did not have life jackets on and were not tethered to a kill switch, which sent the boat into a tight circular pattern known as the “Circle of Death.”

The men were pulled from the water by a passing fishing boat. The beach at Grant Harbor and Brant Rock was temporarily closed due to the potential path of the unmanned boat.

After about 90 minutes, a tow line was used to foul the prop.

Marshfield Police commended the crew of the fishing boat, the Fishing Vessel Finest Kind, for their quick thinking.

“This is a stark reminder of how fast incidents can occur on the water without notice,” police said.

Police say boaters should always wear a life jacket and tether themselves to a boat’s kill switch.
