Thieves swipe food and cash from Brockton youth softball team’s concession stand

BROCKTON, Mass. — It was a winning season for the U-10 team of the Brockton Blazers girls’ softball. They are just one team in this softball league for girls ages 6 to 18 in the City of Champions.

And the big new draw since the Spring was a new red concession stand converted from a used storage container. It was used to feed hungry fans and players and was also set to be the site of a Family Fun Day last weekend.

“It may look like a simple concession stand where we sell things, but it really does add to the gameday experience for these girls and their families,” said Al Basler who is the President of Brockton Blazers Softball.

Once the season ended on August 5, the concession stand was locked up awaiting Family Fun Day on August 19. But last week Basler got a call with some bad news.

“We found out a couple of days before our concession stand was broken into,” said Basler.

Whoever broke in didn’t go through the door but they somehow pried open the concession window. Once it was opened, they hopped inside and went straight to work.

“Estimating the food I would say somewhere in the area of 3 to 4 hundred dollars… in cash another 60 to 70 at the most,” said Basler.

He says many people heard what happened and have reached out offering to donate money and food.

“Like we always say - something bad happens and all of the good in the community comes out and this has been no exception,” he said.

Family Fun Day was canceled but is being rescheduled. As for the team and the concession stand, Basler says this bad break won’t be a setback for the Blazers.

“We’re going to get right back together we’re going to get it restocked.”

They plan to have Family Fun Day in September. If you’d like to help the team, there’s a support link on their website.
