Tens of thousands still without power, some schools canceled after quick storm downs trees, wires across Mass.

Many woke up in the dark Thursday morning in the dark after strong storms moved through the state Wednesday night, leaving downed trees, live wires and extensive damage in their wake, and power is slowly being restored by utility companies.

As of 3:30 p.m. MEMA is reporting just over 60,000 customers without power, down from over 100,000 around 4 a.m.. Some schools have canceled remote and in-person learning for the day due to the outages. In Wayland, where nearly a third of the town lost power, including some school buildings, the superintendent canceled classes for the day. Holliston has also canceled due to outages.

Wednesday’s storms quickly moved the area but left toppled trees and downed power lines in their wake, blocking some streets.

Great Barrington officials said a person was found dead at the Wyantenuck Country Golf Club. On Thursday morning, officials found a golf cart with a tree on top of it on a dirt access road running alongside the golf course. The person was found lying on the ground by the side of the cart and pronounced dead on scene.

Ferry service to Hingham has been canceled for the day after the docks were damaged during the storms.

Eversource says it’s working to repair “tremendous damage” to the utility’s power lines and transformers, along with hundreds of downed trees. A spokesperson said he couldn’t predict restoration times but said additional crews were called in to help.

Winter driving tips from MassDOT:

- Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights, even the hood and roof, before driving, (start with the tailpipe).

- Leave plenty of room for stopping

- Remember that the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

- Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions.

- Bridge decks freeze first. Due to the difference in the exposure to air, the surface condition can be worse on a bridge than on the approach road.

- Exit ramps are an even greater challenge during the winter since they may have received less anti-icing material than the main line.

- Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows – stay back at least 200 feet and don’t pass on the right.

- Seat belts should be worn at all times – it’s the law.

- Most importantly please remember to slow down.
