FALMOUTH, Mass — New video obtained by Boston 25 News shows the moment a Steamship Authority ferry slipped free from its mooring in Falmouth, drifting until it collided with a nearby dock.
The M/V Sankaty came unmoored from the dock at the Woods Hole Terminal on Thursday, July 27, when a bow line slipped off the ship’s bollard. Once the other bollards came free the ship drifted a short distance before colliding with a dock at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Workers had to use ladders to board the drifting ship. The Sankaty also had five lines attached to it while it would be better to have six, Steamship Authority General Manager Robert Davis said in a board meeting Tuesday.
The video below, sped up 5,000%, shows workers making their way onto the deck to return the ship to its’ spot.
The video at the bottom of this article shows the opposite angle, the moment the ship hit the Oceanographic Institution pier.
The Sankaty received no damage and was cleared by the Coast Guard. While the incident is under internal investigation, there is no indication someone deliberately unmoored the ship, a Steamship Authority spokesperson told Boston 25 Wednesday.
In the board meeting, Steamship Authority officials said it was fortunate that no one was injured and the organization made some modifications to its training procedures.
No trips were canceled due to the incident.
