Mask mandate for Chelsea schools after Suffolk County designated as ‘high risk’ for COVID-19

CHELSEA, Mass. — Chelsea Public Schools is implementing a mask mandate for students and stuff after the CDC last week designated Suffolk County as high risk for COVID-19 transmission.

In a letter to the school community, Superintendent Dr. Almi G. Abeyta said, “As a result of this designation, Chelsea Public Schools will implement a mask mandate, effective on Monday.”

Abeyta said masks must be worn in school buildings at all times except when eating or drinking. People visiting school buildings will also be required to mask up.

The school district plans to monitor data and follow CDC recommendations in the event the risk level changes.

Students and staff at UMass Boston will also once again be required to wear masks on campus.

School officials in several other communities recommended masks and testing last week when students returned from winter break.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
