Man tried to disarm New Hampshire trooper during parking lot attack, state police say

DOVER, N.H. — A man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he attacked a state trooper and tried to disarm him during a violent encounter in a parking lot in New Hampshire on Thursday afternoon.

Jonathan G. Newcomb, 53, of Dover, New Hampshire, is slated to be arraigned on Friday on charges including criminal threatening, attempting to take a firearm from law enforcement, driving while intoxicated, stalking, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, and theft, according to New Hampshire State Police.

A trooper was parked near Route 16 along Dover Point Road in Dover, completing administrative tasks in his cruiser, when Newcomb pulled up next to him and exited his vehicle with a stick and a metal tool in hand, state police noted.

“As he got closer to the trooper, the man became verbally aggressive and challenged the trooper,” the law enforcement agency wrote in a statement. “As the trooper tried to identify the man, the encounter became physical. The man punched the trooper, tore his uniform, and attempted to take the trooper’s gun.”

After a “prolonged” struggle, state police say the trooper gained control and arrested Newcomb, who was taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with minor injuries. The trooper was also evaluated at the hospital as a precaution.

Newcomb was booked at the Strafford County Jail ahead of an arraignment.

The incident remains under investigation.
