LYNN – A fast moving fire in Lynn on Allerton Street forced two families from their home Tuesday.
“Panic, panic. I called 911 they had already gotten the call,” said Carol Meneades, a neighbor who called 911.
Cell phone video obtained by Boston 25 shows why a neighbor was frightened at the sight of flames devouring the roof of the 2-family next door.
“The fire was definitely in the attic. It looks like it started on the first floor,” said Deputy Chief Michael McBride of the Lynn Fire Department.
That same neighbor someone barbequing might have started the blaze…
“Like I said we thought it was a grill,” said Meneades.
The Chief also says the fire started outside. he says it spread quickly causing the roof to give way.
“Yes, the roof collapsed and we were very nervous about the chimney. The chimney was leaning to one side. We were nervous that was going to come down,” said Deputy Chief McBride.
The Chief pulled every firefighter out to be safe. The heat on Tuesday was also a big concern.
“Guys get exhausted faster and we have to rotate crews more so we had to go from working fire to a second alarm so we’d have enough guys here,” said Deputy Chief McBride.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion but was treated on the scene. There was also a water issue but it was quickly resolved.
“So, we were able to contain it to just this building,” he said.
Two families, a total of 8 people lived in the building. All got out safely, a relief to neighbors.
“I just prayed nobody got hurt. Nobody lost their life. That’s all you can pray for.” said Meneades.
Firefighters say the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
