Investigation underway after two reported robberies of postal carriers in Dorchester, police say

BOSTON — Authorities said a mail carrier in Dorchester was robbed of their master key after someone pulled a gun on them and less than an hour later another postal worker was almost robbed Friday morning.

Officers responding to the area of 23 Mora Street around 11:10 a.m. for a report of an armed robbery found that a postal carrier had been robbed of their master key at gunpoint, according to Boston Police. The victim was uninjured and the suspects fled the scene. A description of the suspects was not immediately available.

Gin Manuel said he was working outside on Mora St. in Dorchester Friday morning when a mail carrier came running up to him.

He told me A man came he took the keys, and he ran,” said Manuel.

During that time, Dan Hendrigan, whose been a mail carrier in Dorchester for 24 years said, he got two messages on his scanner, one warning him about an armed robbery.

“Its been going on a lot we’ve had many, many 5-6 the past six years,” said Hendrigan.

He said back at the post office he was filled in on what happened.

“Bobby was held him at gunpoint and took his keys,” he said, “From what I know Bubba didn’t let them have they wanted the keys Bubba didn’t let them have the keys.”

Less than 30 minutes later, police say they received a call after an attempt was made to rob a second postal carrier, this time at 226 Fuller Street.

Joe Donald said he was sitting in his truck on Fuller St. when a mail carrier came rushing up to his window.

“He said that guy right that he just tried to rob me and the guy was running damn he was going on down the street on the other side,” said Donald.

Donald said he didn’t get a good look at the suspect.

“All saw was the back with the black hoodie on I didn’t see his face,” he said, “the mail carrier was kind of upset.”

Hendrigan said when it comes to safety they’re told to be aware of their surroundings and just hand over their keys if ever faced with this type of situation.

The Postal Inspection said neither of the mailmen were hurt.

According to investigators, it’s unclear if the two robberies are connected.

In a statement, the U.S. Postal Service says they’re in the early stages of the investigation.

“The Postal Service employees did not suffer any physical injuries and Postal Inspectors are working with local management to support the involved employees,” a spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to contact Boston Police.
