DA: Baby found at Rochester recycling center may have been left at Martha’s Vineyard facility

ROCHESTER, Mass. — Five days after the horrific discovery of a baby’s body at a Rochester, MA recycling facility, authorities are revealing that the child’s body could have been abandoned at a Martha’s Vineyard trash facility a full week before it was found.

Cape and Island’s District Attorney Robert Galibois says the case is difficult for investigators to process.

“Obviously, this is a horrific set of circumstances. We’re all human beings here. It impacts all of us, prosecutors, state police detectives,” DA Gailbois told me.

A worker at the Zero Waste Solutions Recycling Facility in Rochester discovered the body of a baby last Thursday at 10 a.m.

Authorities initially described the child as a female, but now they are only describing the child as a baby.

They are not revealing the baby’s race, gender, approximate age, or whether it was ever alive. But they believe the child came to Rochester, from the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse District in Edgartown, 47 miles away.

That facility handles the trash for all of Martha’s Vineyard.

“How was that put together the child is here in Rochester, at this recycling center how is that tied over to Martha’s Vineyard?” Boston 25 Reporter, Bob Ward asked DA Galibois.

“Per the investigation, we’ve been able to determine the transfer station in Edgartown is relevant, we have reason to believe the truck came from this transfer station to the Zero Waste facility in Rochester,” Galibois said.

The baby was found on April 27th in Rochester, but authorities say the baby could have been left at the Martha’s Vineyard facility as far back as April 20th, a full week before the child’s body was found.

“Right now, Bob, we just want to make sure the mother is not in peril. So, we are putting out there that we are looking for the identity and the location of the mother. We just want to make sure she is safe,” DA Galibois said.

Authorities are hoping the new information, and the new dates will trigger someone’s memory, and help identify both the child and its mother.
