Cleanup continues after water main break forces dozens to evacuate in Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. — Cleanup continued Tuesday morning after a water main break Monday afternoon in Lowell’s Acre neighborhood left cars and homes flooded.

A representative with Lowell’s Water Utility Department told Boston 25 News early Tuesday morning that the water main had been repaired, but it was unclear if the water had been turned back on.

“It was a 12-inch main break in the city that flooded out the basement of the Archambault Towers,” said Lowell City Manager Tom Golden. “That kind of damaged some of the heating and some of the electrical.”

Nearly 200 people spent the night away from their homes in emergency shelters.

Boston 25 News crews saw cars being towed away outside the Archambault Towers early Tuesday morning.

The city has not said when they would be able to return to their homes.

Lowell firefighters had to rescue some people using boats after they got trapped in their homes.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
