Canton Police investigate dramatic highway clash recorded on video

CANTON, Mass. — From the first frame to the last, it is a heart-stopping video.

It’s only 21 seconds long, and it was sent to us from a Facebook post.

Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz told me that his detectives received the video from numerous sources and they are analyzing every recorded moment.

“We’re working around the clock to get these people off the road,” Berkowitz said.

The video was shot from a car traveling north on Route 138, a two-lane road in Canton, near the Milton town line.

In the video, someone is heard saying: “Oh My God!” as two cars, bumper to bumper, pass the driver on the left.

A moment later, we hear breaks squealing.

One car splits right, the other tries to pull a quick U-turn to reverse direction onto Route 138.

At the same time, a person emerges from one car, and then we hear gunshots.

All of this going down in broad daylight on busy Route 138, just outside the Woodfield Commons Industrial Park near the Milton town line, on Sunday afternoon.

“I was disgusted. They had total disregard for other people’s lives,” Berkowitz said. “It could have been you, it could have been me.”

The police chief told me the two cars were rentals with New York plates.

One car was ditched about a mile away on Route 138 south, toward Stoughton.

The case is under active investigation.

Berkowitz said incidents of violence from neighboring communities are growing more common.

“There are no geographic borders anymore to the violence out there in the street. There are too many guns, too many people want to use them. And they are all mobile,” Berkowitz said.

Incredibly, no one was hurt, but there’s always concern about what could have happened, and what might happen next time.
