‘Brightened every room’: NH college mourning student-athlete killed in crash with logging truck

KEENE, N.H. — A college in New Hampshire is mourning a student-athlete who was killed in a crash with a logging truck last week.

Kelsey Mayer, 18, of Concord, suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash on Route 9 near a logging site in Stoddard on the morning of March 23, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Mayer was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze on the westbound side of the highway when she struck a Western Star truck that was hauling an unloaded logging trailer, state police said.

Mayer was extricated from her wrecked vehicle and rushed to Concord Hospital. A 19-year-old passenger in the vehicle suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Keene State College Department of Athletics and Recreation on Sunday announced the passing of Mayer and confirmed that she was a freshman defender on the women’s soccer team.

In a statement, the college said, “Mayer was a freshman on the Keene State women’s soccer team this past fall. Kelsey had the ability to make everyone laugh both on and off of the field. She brightened up every room she walked into with the constant smile she had on her face, and always gave 100% in everything she did.”

A GoFundMe has since been established to support Mayer’s family.

The crash remains under investigation.
