ATTLEBORO, Mass. — The future of Capron Park Zoo is back on track — at least for now.
Attleboro’s mayor says the city-run zoo will remain open after all, reversing earlier concerns that it could shut down due to a budget shortfall. To keep the zoo operating through the next fiscal year, the mayor plans to tap into city reserve funds.
The move comes after officials had been weighing a proposal to convert the zoo into a nature preserve and wildlife rehabilitation center as a cost-saving measure.
That sparked backlash from local residents, who voiced strong opposition and pushed to preserve the zoo as a community attraction.
City leaders are expected to take up the issue at an upcoming budget meeting, where a formal vote on zoo funding will determine its future beyond next year.
