78 people displaced, pets rescued after fire breaks out at Boston apartment building

BOSTON — Dozens of residents were forced out of their homes and firefighters had to rescue several pets after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Boston on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Crews responding to a report of a fire at 1980 Commonwealth Avenue around 9:30 a.m. rushed into the building and started knocking on doors to alert residents to the blaze, according to the Boston Fire Department.

A total of 78 residents were evacuated from 58 units and they are now displaced.

The fire has since been knocked down, but the building will require a thorough inspection before people are allowed back inside, officials said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

An investigation remains ongoing.
