18-year-old East Boston teen killed, 2 other men injured in Vermont crash, state police say

BARTON, Vermont — An East Boston teenager was killed and two other Boston men were seriously injured in a crash in Vermont over the weekend, state police said.

Brian Sanchez, 18, died in the crash that happened at approximately 12:43 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 91 in Barton, near mile marker 155, state police said.

A preliminary investigation found that a 2013 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound, veered off the right side of the interstate, and down an embankment where it struck the wood line and a concrete wall that diverted running water, state police said.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, Ediberto Luna, 30, of East Boston, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, state police said.

The front seat passenger, Jorge Caballeros, 33, also of East Boston, suffered serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening at this time, state police said.

Both Luna and Caballeros were taken by ambulance to North Country Hospital and then sent to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Their conditions were not known on Tuesday.

Sanchez, a rear seat passenger, was taken by ambulance to North Country Hospital where he later died, state police said.

Caballeros and Sanchez were not wearing seat belts when the crash occurred, but Luna was wearing a seat belt, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Joshua Mikkola at joshua.mikkola@vermont.gov, or call 802-334-8881.
