Leominster man arrested in Dorchester after alleged gunfire in Somerville

A Leominster man was arrested in Dorchester after an alleged incident involving shots fired, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Investigators say 27-year-old William Freeman-Benjamin put a lot of people in danger Wednesday on busy city roadways spanning more than seven miles after what police called a moment of rage directed toward a woman he had been romantically involved with.

A dozen squad cars more than doubled in presence to at least 30 in the residential Dorchester neighborhood, and Sky25 was overhead as authorities from multiple agencies teamed up to take down Freeman-Benjamin in the passenger seat of a Hyundai Sonata.

The woman driving the car was also taken into custody after a police chase stretching all the way from Somerville.

"What are the chances that it ends right on our corner?" a witness named Seth said.

Police said they desperately tried to put an end to it sooner, but allege Freeman-Benjamin wouldn't surrender after investigators say he got violent after crossing paths with a domestic partner near the intersection of Somerville Avenue and McGrath Highway in Somerville.

A single shot was fired toward that woman's vehicle, and, according to a police source, she had a young child in tow.

Police say the mother and child weren't hurt in the incident.

Police say a trooper found the vehicle around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday that was wanted by Somerville Police for the alleged incident, and troopers and officers stopped the vehicle on Savin Hill Avenue.

Freeman-Benjmain was transported to the South Boston State Police Barracks, and the 33-year-old Woburn woman in the car was also taken to the barracks in a separate cruiser before being interviewed by Massachusetts State Police detectives.

Somerville Police picked up the suspect around 1:30 p.m. to bring him back to the Somerville Police Department, and the incident remains under investigation.

A previous version of this story said Freeman-Benjamin was facing a kidnapping charge. Massachusetts State Police later clarified Somerville Police would be handling any charges.
